JEFF the Brotherhood Announce Tour with The Kills

Despite that there is no Jeff, brothers Jake and Jamin Orrall make up the whole of Nashville band JEFF the Brotherhood. The brothers have had an exciting year, marking the release of Live At Third Man (via Third Man Records), We Are the Champions (via Infinity Cat Recordings) and a series of special-edition singles (including a split 7″ with Best Coast), and they are kicking off 2012 in the same fashion, beginning with a tour of North America with fellow rockers, The Kills.

According to Jamin, the tour begins on Jake’s birthday. Make it special, Chicago.

Prussia Release Part Three of Poor English

Detroit band Prussia have been releasing 10″ vinyls over the last three months to complete the Poor English series. The final installment releases tomorrow on October 18th and will be available for a free stream and download.

The series is lyrically eccentric to say the least. Combine that with the distinct and elaborate sound the band have to offer and it’s the perfect equation for catchy (and abnormal) pop tunes. The video for “What Am I Gonna Tell Your Mom?” is a good example of all of this:

fun. Debut New Track, “We Are Young,” Featuring Janelle Monae

Despite last week’s studio update and knowing that the album will be released next year via Fueled By Ramen, there’s still not much info floating around about fun.‘s second release. As of today, however, the band premiered their first single, “We Are Young,” featuring vocals by Janelle Monae.

The track opens with a naked drumbeat and leads into a big, anthemic chorus with Nate Ruess’s soaring vocals saturated in a layer of autotune and eventually backed by a wall of sound-type choir. It seems a bit sacrilegious to mask Ruess’ voice with any sort of technology but the sound is full and the chorus swells as a result of it. The song is a fist-pumper, and the live translation of “We Are Young” should be effective and, subsequently, thrilling and rad.

If you’re a college student, fun. and Janelle Monae may be hitting a campus near you.

Watch Girls’ Nashville In-Store Performance

San Francisco’s Girls found a way to cram their seven-person band into independent record store, Grimey’s, on Friday afternoon and kicked off the weekend with an in-store rock show here in Nashville. The show was streamed live on Ustream, just hours before Girls took the stage at Mercy Lounge to play a longer, less claustrophobic set.

The six-song set was new jam heavy, featuring mostly songs from last week’s (fan.tas.tic.) release, Father, Son, Holy Ghost, and the band played one of the album’s prettiest, most sway-friendly tracks, “Love Is Like A River” (beginning at the seven minute mark). But, really, the whole set is so good.

fun. Hit the Studio, Offer Preview Of New Album

fun. have holed themselves up in a Los Angeles studio with producer Jeff Bhasker to record their second album, documenting the process along the way. The video follows the band through the studio as they exaplain their creative modus operandi and captures lead singer and lyricist, Nate Ruess, describing the experience as “the best time that I’ve ever had making an album.” He also states, “It took me a long time to get inspired but once I did, I’d never been as inspired to do anything as I have with this album.” Whoa. Given that introduction coupled with our enthusiasm for their debut release, this second album stands to be one of the best things about 2012.

HYPE: The Spade, Butch Walker

Butch Walker‘s sixth studio album runs the gamut of pop music in just ten tracks. From anthemic pop/rock to pop-twinged Americana to Duran Duran references, the singer/songwriter/producer makes a play at reclaiming pop music in the form of his most-recent release, The Spade.

Like 2008′s Sycamore Meadows, this release is best consumed as a whole, the energy of each song elevated and strengthened by the track preceeding it. The stamina of The Spade seems neverending, pausing just once to take a breath by way of “Closest Thing To You I’m Gonna Find,” the only ballad featured on the album.

Because it’s Butch, the lyrics are often written with a wink and a nudge, never taking the music too seriously and maintaining a playful attitude by keeping everyone in on the joke. Many of the songs feature Butch/band banter interspersed between huge chrouses and catchy hooks, keeping the vibe lively, anthemic and perhaps moderately drunk.

Initial standouts on The Spade are found in “Sweethearts,” a mid-tempo love song with a hook as sticky as the lyrics are sweet, the chorus of “Synthesizers,” a song that seems to remind people of a Dexy’s Midnight Runners jam, and “Dublin Crow,” an Irish-influenced, harmony-heavy folk song that warns If I’m drownin’, please don’t save me ’cause I gotta save myself. Though each of the songs are capable of standing alone, they are much stronger as a unit, proving that Butch Walker is willing to put his producer credit where his mouth is in the battle to keep albums relevant in the fight against single-serving music consumption.

Of his recent work, The Spade seems to be Butch Walker’s biggest push to expand his already-expansive must-hear live setlist. Every song on the album stands to take on a more feral, fist-pumping persona in a live setting, and to become a true Butch Walker fan is to see him live at least four times.

Will Hoge Takes the Stage For Nashville’s Live On the Green

After years of seeing singer/songwriter Will Hoge play in cities and venues across the country, we finally got our opportunity to catch him live in the birthplace of his music and his career, Nashville, TN.

Opening the annual concert series Live On the Green, Will played the perfect mix of new and old songs, including a version of “When I Can Afford To Lose” that featured the vocalist trading in his guitar for the keyboard. Hoge also played “Ms. Williams,” introducing it as the first of his songs he ever heard on the radio, a goosebumps-inducing rendition of “When I Get My Wings,” and rounded out the set by bringing former keys player, Jefferson Crow, up onstage for “Pocket Full Of Change.”

The event announcers made endless jokes about trying to guess whether forthcoming release Number Seven is or is not Will Hoge’s seventh album and that was almost as lame as the part when an unnamed independent music journalist may or may not have become somewhat choked with emotion during the third verse of “Even If It Breaks Your Heart.”

Number Seven will be released on September 27th.

Yuck Announce Release of Deluxe Album, Stream “Cousin Corona”

Yuck are releasing a deluxe edition of their debut, self-titled album next month via Fat Possum and, in addition to some new artwork, the track listing will include six b-sides, allowing for the introduction of songs like “Cousin Corona,” which stays true to Yuck form, opening with a dark and thick bass line and building upon itself slowly, adding lots of drums and guitar fuzz in the chorus in a way that reminds you of some other ’90s bands, but not necessarily in a bad way:

The six additonal songs were written during the same timeframe as the tracks that made it onto the initial album so the formula doesn’t change much which, judging by the sound of “Cousin Corona” is a good thing.

Hear New BRAIDS Track “Peach Wedding”

We need more BRAIDS. Native Speaker was great, but there just needs to be a little more. Good thing the band will be joining Purity Ring to release a limited edition split 7″ via Fat Possum on October 10th. This limited edition can only be acquired through one of both bands on their North American tour.

“Peach Wedding” is the BRAIDS track that will appear on the 7″ and it doesn’t lack the dreamy pop rhythms and hypnotizing vocals heard on Native Speaker.

Dominant Legs Debut Video For “Hoop Of Love”

San Francisco’s Dominant Legs will be releasing their first full-length, Invitation (Lefse), this autumn despite the fact that it may be one of the summer’s best albums. First-listen tracks “Where We Trip the Light” and “Hoop Of Love” are bright and upbeat jams with summer synth melodies that are not only stomachable, but also good! And fun!

In the band’s debut video (premiered over at Stereogum) for their song, “Hoop Of Love,” singer/songwriter Ryan Lynch and keyboardist Hanna Hunt go on a day trip to the lake for some dancing, slingshots, and pomegranate:
