This folksy ballad exhibits some of the qualities, which for me are paramount in songwriting—well, mostly the importance of well-written lyrics. I believe that before Dylan is a musician, he is a poet. His lyrics are simply inundated with vivid imagery and wonderful poetry.

I believe “Blowin’ In the Wind,” to be an enduring accomplishment and monument which speak to the importance of potent lyrics. The lyrics of many of Dylan’s songs ask us to imagine—to see things—beautiful, and tragic things. It is the music that helps us feel, and the words which help us see. The beautiful union of music and poetry is certainly sacred and powerful. It is the duty of the songwriter to imagine—to see things— and cause people to wonder. Dylan does this wonderfully.
