Free Music: Bowerbirds, “Tuck the Darkness In”

North Carolina duo Bowerbirds are preparing to release their third full-length, The Clearing, an album Beth Tacular and Phil Moore created in the midst of an extreme personal climate. From the press release:

Between 2009’s Upper Air and this one, Beth nearly died after a mysterious illness that put her in the hospital. They rescued and adopted a dog that ran beneath their tour van’s tires. Beth and Phil even ended their long relationship but began it again after realizing that, despite their own shortcomings, they didn’t want to be with anyone else. Mostly, though, they returned to their cabin in the woods of North Carolina to nest—to make soup and walk dogs, to make art and write songs, to realize that this was their life and find contentment in it.

The Clearing is available via Dead Oceans on March 6, 2012, but download and keep the album’s first track, “Tuck the Darkness In,” here and now.

Lovedrug Premiere Video for “Dinosaur,” Offer Free Cover Of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams”

Nashville-via-Ohio four piece, Lovedrug, have premiered the video for their most-recent release, “Dinosaur.” Written and directed by frontman Michael Shepard, the video follows a motley crew of hooligan girls in and out of the woods while they are stalked by Sasquatch, who seems endeared by their reckless shenanigans.

“Dinosaur” was recently released as a split single, sharing its release space with “Pink Champagne,” a similarly-infectious midtempo pop/rock jam with a catchy hook. Hear it here:

Free Music: Parachute Musical, “Back To Life”

After taking a brief hiatus from touring to record their latest album, Nashville-based four piece Parachute Musical are set to release their third full-length, Kill It Cut It Down, on August 23rd. Funded by the help of friends and fans, the album was recorded in Cleveland and produced by Jim Wirt (Fiona Apple, Incubus, Jack’s Mannequin). The band will be returning to the road soon in support of the album; we will be covering it.

Mayer Hawthorne Premieres Video For “A Long Time”

Mayer Hawthorne‘s new video for “A Long Time” was premiered this week and it flirts with the broad line between wonderful and awful in the way that only things in the ’80s could. Featuring clips from The New Dance Show, Detroit’s knockoff version of Soul Train, host R.J. Watkins is edited to introduce Hawthorne’s latest single. And then hilarity ensues.

(Your parents thought this was cool.)

Stream The Antlers’ Burst Apart

With May approaching, the followup to Hospice is right around the corner. We filled you in on The Antlers and their upcoming album Burst Apart when we saw them play it live in its entirety at this year’s SXSW. It lacked the cohesiveness we all adored in Hospice, but then again, that’s the concept of a concept album.

With that being said, Burst Apart isn’t a bust. It’s actually reassuring to know it’s possible to play any one of the tracks from this album and not have to devote 52 minutes of your time because, let’s face it, in its entirety was the best way to enjoy Hospice.

Burst Apart presents a solid sound and should not be compared to what Hospice offered. Listening unbiasedly is going to be the biggest hurdle for fans of its predecessor, but tracks like “Parentheses” and “French Exit” suggests something new from The Antlers that couldn’t be achieved in the past. If you want to make your own calls on this matter, NPR is currently offering a full stream of Burst Apart for free. If you like what you hear (you will), then catch The Antlers out live:

Born from the mind of producer/multi-instrumentalist Jason Drake, Cassettes Won’t Listen began as a bedroom project in the form of a collection of synths and samples, coupled with Drake’s haunting vocals. On June 21st, the newest conglomeration of Cassettes Won’t Listen tracks will be available by way of KEVINSPACEY (Daylight Curfew), the followup to 2008′s Small-Time Machine.
