We’ve always been pretty shameless in regard to our devotion to Ernie Halter. In addition to co-writing songs with Jason Gambill (of Lady Antebellum) and Demi Lovato, the singer/songwriter will hit the road this summer with Tony Lucca for the Reunited (And It Feels So Good) Tour and is releasing his third studio LP, Franklin & Vermont. Busy guy!

If you like free things, Ernie is rewarding you for your cheapness and your honesty with a free sampler of his music, available exclusively through Amazon. The eight-track sampler includes songs from Congress Hotel, Starting Over, Franklin & Vermont and a little something extra for all of you in the final track, entitled “You’re Awesome.”

Franklin & Vermont is currently available for presale and is, according to Ernie, his best work yet.

Franklin & Vermont, via Rock Ridge Music

01. Hard To Let A Good Love Go

The best thing about Butch Walker‘s music lies between the fine line of never being sure of what to expect from him and always feeling comfortable with the outcome of each new release. Each Butch Walker album sounds like a Butch Walker album without feeling monotonous or like a sequel to its predecessor. And he always delivers. Walker’s newest release, I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart, showcases the next step of the singer/songwriter/producer’s evolution from 2008′s Sycamore Meadows and highlights his eclectic tastes and unmistakable ability to remain accessible without sounding pre-packaged or mass produced. Whether you’re most comfortable with Marvelous 3-era Butch, 1969 Butch, or Butch Walker the solo artist, each new album represents the best possible version of what you were never expecting from him.

I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart
Release Date: Digital February 9th, Physical Febuary 23rd via One Haven Music

01. Trash Day
02. Pretty Melody
03. Don’t You Think Someone Should Take You Home
04. Stripped Down Version
05. Canadian Ten
06. Temporary Title
07. She Likes Hair Bands
08. House of Cards
09. They Don’t Know What We Know
10. Days/Months/Years
11. Be Good Until Then

A highly-regarded (and heavily-demanded) music producer, Walker seems to have perfected the art of setting the tone of an album and sticking to it. As a producer and an artist, Walker’s fingerprints are all over each of his records, each song a solid representation of his capabilities in playing both roles. His newest release is well-constructed while the songs often tell stories of hardship in life and in love in a way that is never short on integrity or self-reflection. I Liked It Better distinguishes the symmetry between production value and artistic integrity, never allowing one to dominate the other.

Though the songs he produces for other musicians tend to be more radio-primed than those featured on his solo albums, Walker seems to save his best work for himself. (Sorry, Avril). I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart opens with “Trash Day,” the most suitable track of the album to set the mood for the 11 songs which follow it, and moves seamlessly into “Pretty Melody,” which delivers exactly what the song title implies. Even in its slowest moments, Butch Walker’s fifth solo LP manages to only gain momentum and never loses rectitude. While each song asserts its own identity, I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart celebrates the forgotten art of absorbing an album from beginning to end.

—–

Purchase I Liked It Better When You Had No Heart on iTunes or get yourself an old fashioned, physical copy of the album on CD or vinyl.

Last week we filled you in on MGMT‘s new album Congratulations. It had been a long time coming, so it was comforting to see what the band had steadily been working on for the past year. In addition to the release date and track listing that we shared with you, this week we also have the album art for their new project.

Anthony Ausgang is a celebrated Low Brow artist and hooked up with MGMT at the Malibu mansion where Congratulations was being recorded at the time. Not being a musician, Ausgang left the beats to his pals and stuck to the pen and paper he’s familiar with. This is what he came up with:

If you want to pre-order Congratulations, you can do so at the MGMT online store. To catch MGMT in their music festival glory this spring, check out any one of the following dates:

If you’re a Local Natives fan, then you know about the U.S. release of Gorilla Manor via Frenchkiss Records, and if you’re not a fan you should still know because we recently told you (and you should also be a fan). “Sun Hands,” the band’s third track off of Gorilla Manor, is posted on their MySpace page for your listening pleasure.

“Sun Hands” is a track that really stands out and has a unique way of building up from beginning to end. It starts out calm but breaks out in a way where mosh-pitting through the drywall in your room seems acceptable. Then everything goes calm again, and you’re left to clean up the mess. Here’s the artwork for the single (and yes, I’m pretty sure that’s a ball of hair on the fork):

Even though the albums were originally released on the band’s homemade label and distributed locally, they still brought Minnesota natives, Cloud Cult, attention on a national level and still have more to offer you than the common Midwestern accent (don’tcha know?).

The band just re-released remixed and remastered versions of their 2003 and 2004 albums They Live on the Sun and Aurora Borealis and added bonus tracks as well. The double-disc edition is out now and is traditionally distributed in Cloud Cult fashion, meaning that the albums are 100% post-consumer material, printed with soy inks, and also mastered with the use of wind energy, making Cloud Cult a very environmentally conscious band (if that’s your kind of thing).

If you’re interested in hearing a track from each album, we have those here for you to stream:

Self-funded and produced by Raymond Richards in West L.A., the band’s official debut offers twelve tracks as well as an idea of what band members Andy Hamm and Matt Frazier are capable of artistically, as they are responsible for the Gorilla Manor album art. Here is what Andy came up with for the cover:

Toro Y Moi, also known as Chaz Bundick, resides in Columbia, South Carolina but has the cultural sounds of someone who could list Professional Globe-trotter on a resume. After graduating with a degree in graphic design, it became apparent to Bundick that he wanted to do something which had no real association with his chosen career path (because what are degrees for anyway, right?). With some newfound free time on his hands, he focused on his music, which held no boundaries or limitations in regard to his range of style.

There aren’t many rules attached to the music being created here, which tends to make the sound more interesting. Toro Y Moi doesn’t follow any particular style or genre — the layers are instead meshed together to create multi-layered tracks that reflect their influences. Freak folk, R&B and even French House have a spot in his musical experiments.

To give you a head start on the upcoming album, Causers of This, which is set to release early of next year, you can download the track “Blessa” here:
