Gigantis, Holy Rolling Empire
Holy Rolling Empire‘s debut album, Gigantis, is an album full of dichotomies.
Though they came together only two short years ago in 2007, Holy Rolling Empire have achieved the tight but dirty sound even the best rock bands can’t create without first littering their past with years of alcoholism, breakups, and a subsequent group trip to rehab. Their sound walks the line between clamoring for your attention and giving off the impression that they don’t really give a shit about what you think. And if you’re the type of person who judges books by their covers– or songs by their titles– forget it. Songs like “Bipolar Bear Mania” and “If You Can’t Beat It, Fuck It” will rock your world and make you question all of your rules about music because they are two of the best songs on the album.
Gigantis is full of rock… with a hint of psychedelic funk, and there’s never a dull moment at any point.
What’s most interesting about the album is the way the music could so easily become noise. On the surface, Gigantis sounds like a party– the kind of party that ends with some dude you don’t know passed out on your couch and a your best friend’s girlfriend is puking in the kitchen sink. However, if you really listen, there is not one member of the band who can’t play his instrument. There is a certain amount of control and ambiguous genius that keeps the music from spinning out of control. It’s the kind of rock n roll that only gets better as the volume gets louder.
Gigantis will be released on March 3rd through Burning House Records.
And, just out of curiosity, is there a lyric that discusses an “old man’s culo” in “Space-Crime Continuum” (circa 1:13)? If it were almost any other band, I’d question my ears (and my maturity level). With Holy Rolling Empire, you never really know…
