First Love, Emmy the Great

Emmy the Great is led by English folk singer, Emma Lee-Moss. If you generally associate folk music with sweet lyrics about lost love, new love, and puppy love, then you may not be ready for “We Almost Had A Baby”, the first single from her debut album, First Love. Disguised by a sweet melody and soft harmonies, the song’s lyrics are centered around a scorned woman who daydreams about becoming pregnant with her ex-lover’s baby as a form of control over the relationship.

Yikes.

Lyrics like I would have called you, and I’d have said, “Hey, you know I’m in control and I’ll let you know if you have to come and choose a name” are far scarier and more hardcore than any metal-rock guitar riff.

Though Emma Lee-Moss is the driving force behind Emmy the Great, she considers the project a collaborative effort, often inviting friends and fellow musicians to form the band behind her lyrics. Emmy the Great recently wrapped a tour of Europe with Young Husband and cites the band’s frontman, Euan Hinshelwood, as one of the co-producers of First Love.

After releasing several of her own EPs, touring with established musicians such as Martha Wainwright and Kimya Dawson, and lending her musical talents to a slew of bands, Emmy the Great released a round of promotional copies of First Love to the public back in January. Feeling the promos were softened by the mastering process, the singer sent the raw mixes of her songs to be re-mastered, giving the album the more honest sound that she intended it to have.

Emmy the Great’s debut album, First Love, was released in the U.K. on February 9th, 2009 and is available elsewhere via iTunes.

I love Emmy the Great – her contribution to Norman Cook’s “BPA” project (the song “Seattle) was my favorite track on that album, and one of my favorite this year so far
