Davy, Coconut Records

There is a long and unfortunate list of actors whose resumes are littered with dead or dying music careers. Despite incessant ridicule and desperate pleas from the public to just return to their day jobs, they forge on. Fortunately for us all, Jason Schwartzman isn’t that kind of actor. Following the 2007 debut of Nighttiming, Davy marks the second release from Coconut Records, the actor/screenwriter/musician/former Phantom Planet drummer’s California-based solo music project.

Davy is a collection of songs built for sunny days, even when the second track, “Drummer,” begins with a lyric as honest and blunt as, At fourteen, I lost my dad, it’s true. Each track on the album helps us all to remember that the words fun and catchy aren’t synonymous with, well, obnoxious.

On the surface, Davy is the type of album you play on the drive home from work to curb road rage, but Schwartzman’s lyrics are a little deeper than his melodies would imply. With each track lasting only about three minutes, every song has its own short story to tell, and as it turns out, Jason Schwartzman has some worthwhile things to say.
