Day Three

SXSW 2011, Friday
by Nick Chaivarlis

If you happen to catch a glimpse of a yellow bus in our coverage, we weren’t following around school children. Freaks. We happened to stumble upon the Third Man Records Rolling Record Store, which was parked in different locations around Austin, selling merchandise. Way cooler than an ice cream sandwich. Although we didn’t get lucky enough to catch Jack White in action, other people did.

Even though it had been less than twenty four hours since his previous performance, we needed our Tony Lucca fix just one more time. And tacos– we needed more tacos. With this being his first year playing at South By, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to catch as much of Lucca’s talent and enthusiasm as we could. We also made some time to catch Savoir Adore to see what we’ve been missing out on. Even though we were hard up to see Austra this year, the band were mysteriously (but not surprisingly) missing from the South African music night at the Flamingo Cantina that evening. Schedule change?

Lucca and Keaton Simons shared the stage at the Lucky Lounge for the entire set, making it one big, friendly show. The two artists supported each other musically as they alternated between collaborations and their original songs.

Walking down a staircase into a large basement, the vibe changed to a slightly literal and figurative underground one at Easy Tiger. Savoir Adore were entertaining the underground crowd, literally and figuratively, and played a mellow set for a very mellow crowd.
