“Why?” by Annie Lennox, Written By Musician Kristi Jo

Some songs are more than just a few notes and chords.
We remember this every time we’re in love, every time we get dumped, and every time we feel inspired to post the lyrics of a song as our new MySpace headlines. (Whether you’ve acted on it or not, don’t judge. You’ve been there.)Some songs represent the bookmarks of our lives. They speak to us when we can’t speak for ourselves, and sometimes they say the things we’re not eloquent enough to express without a little help.
This is where we expose your secrets.
If you’re feeling brave and the exhibitionist in you is feeling a little stifled, send your songs and stories to us at editor@audioholicmedia.com. We will post them here. For the world to see.
Written by Kristi Jo:
There are so many songs that pull at my heart strings. So many songs that have been stamped into various moments of my life. Some with a positive stamp and others with stamps of heartbreak and hurt. That’s the beauty of music and lyrics. Together the power of a song never ceases to amaze me.
When it comes to appreciating good songs, I can never narrow it down to a single choice. However, right now I’ve chosen one that in all honesty, I wish I’d written.
In my opinion “Why” by Annie Lennox is simple, intelligent and beautiful. For me, as a songwriter her lyrics are something to marvel at. They are so vunerable and honest, I can only hope to someday reach the level of freedom she has achieved in my own songwriting.
One of my favorite lines is “Why can’t you see, this boat is sinking”. It’s such a sad way of admitting that maybe it’s just not worth fighting for. This song is a cry for help, a confession and not only do the lyrics lay it all on the line, the music accompaniment is equally truthful. The chorus is only ONE WORD! Sometimes for those uncertain and hurtful moments your life, the ones where songs like “Why” will forever be stamped in your memory I suppose one word is all you need.
My advice for you: Wait until night time, light a few candles, and turn this song on and enjoy. Thank you, Annie.

[Lyrics:]
How many times do I have to try to tell you
That I’m sorry for the things I’ve done
But when I start to try to tell you
That’s when you have to tell me
Hey… this kind of trouble’s only just begun
I tell myself too many times
Why don’t you ever learn to keep your big mouth shut
That’s why it hurts so bad to hear the words
That keep on falling from your mouth
Falling from your mouth
Falling from your mouth
Tell me…
Why
Why
I may be mad
I may be blind
I may be viciously unkind
But I can still read what you’re thinking
And I’ve heard is said too many times
That you’d be better off
Besides…
Why can’t you see this boat is sinking
(this boat is sinking this boat is sinking)
Let’s go down to the water’s edge
And we can cast away those doubts
Some things are better left unsaid
But they still turn me inside out
Turning inside out turning inside out
Tell me…
Why
Tell me…
Why
This is the book I never read
These are the words I never said
This is the path I’ll never tread
These are the dreams I’ll dream instead
This is the joy that’s seldom spread
These are the tears…
The tears we shed
This is the fear
This is the dread
These are the contents of my head
And these are the years that we have spent
And this is what they represent
And this is how I feel
Do you know how I feel ?
’cause i don’t think you know how I feel
I don’t think you know what I feel
I don’t think you know what I feel
You don’t know what I feel
