Melvins, “Skin Horse”

Some songs are more than just a few notes and chords.
We remember this every time we’re in love, every time we get dumped, and every time we feel inspired to post the lyrics of a song as our new MySpace headlines. (Whether you’ve acted on it or not, don’t judge. You’ve been there.)Some songs represent the bookmarks of our lives. They speak to us when we can’t speak for ourselves, and sometimes they say the things we’re not eloquent enough to express without a little help.
This is where we expose your secrets.
If you’re feeling brave and the exhibitionist in you is feeling a little stifled, send your songs and stories to us at editor@audioholicmedia.com. We will post them here. For the world to see.
“Skin Horse” by the Melvins
you cannot grasp the effect of this song simply by reading the lyrics..i’ve been listening to it for 2 years and i am still realizing things about it.
it is split into two parts..the first two stanzas being the first part and the third stanza being the second part. the beginning sounds like a pop rock, feel-good song while the second part sounds like a lullaby and the singer’s voice is distorted to sound like a baby.
i was working at CD Warehouse the first time i heard it. my immediate reaction was to smile because it sounded so ridiculous with the infantile vocals, and i thought it was just for the sake of being weird..
the first time i actually listened to the lyrics, this line caught my attention: “in time it will all be over, it’ll be good.” and i thought, ‘its about suicide….or death in general’
i listened to it again, really trying to pay attention to the lyrics around that part of the song and i picked up something else: “..but i’m old and i’m getting older…knew i would.” this reminded me of a very specific event in my life when my best friend and i were hanging out for the last time before we went to separate colleges in different states. the central thought of our conversation was this: “dude this might be the last time we get stoned together”. at the time, that’s all it meant..but as time passed i understood what we were really talking about..
from then on, whenever i listened to it, the line “…knew i would..” really affected me because the singer/songwriter (Buzz Osborne) is nostalgic, thinking about having fun as a kid…but now he’s older and his time is running out. it makes me so sad because i KNEW I WOULD be in his shoes one day, looking back and wishing i had more time..
finally i took the time to read the lyrics and got stuck on this: “later days finally coming on to take me away…little place near the holy one…and let’s run.”
“later days”= the end of his life…”finally comin’ on to take me away”= death is inevitable and he’s been waiting for it….”little place near the holy one”= some form of the after life…. “and lets run”= let’s hurry up and die.
all this time i had paid no attention to the first part of the song because i was so enthralled by the end of it.. i read the lyrics: “he’ll chance the overload when it’s all about the end.”= suicide by overdose.
the next line that caught my attention was this: “wishin’ i was at the where dull razors all began”…my immediate reaction was to think that he wished he had fresh/sharp razors to cut his wrists with.. but maybe it means he wishes he could go back to when he was young and happy, before he started entertaining thoughts of suicide..
“everyone is shifting all around his agonize”= he feels like everyone around him is happy and he is the only one in emotional agony.
“shoulder only angel seven, half of every golden an.. on those that really help me, time unveils”= this has something to do with reaffirmations to the people in his life who were good to him and who believed in him..
“ty regarding visionary”= referring to the opening line of the song…ty represents something that is imaginary or unreal.
this song makes me cry when i listen to it because i relate to it soo much. i have had all of these feelings in the past so i cry out of empathy.
i also cry out of happiness because i know that “in time it will all be over, it’ll be good.”

[Lyrics:]
Ty plays the battle fold though bastardly
Follow said criminal in the form of his hand
He’ll chance the overload when it’s all about the end
Maybe the size and soul will settle in
Everyone is shifting all around his agonize
Can’t make the sort of sound this and dust could sanitize
Gonna see in Earth all edge
Wishing I was at the where dull razors all began
Shoulder only angel seven half of every golden an
on those who really help me time unveils
Ty regarding visionary
Give it all to me. I didnt’ wanna be
Singled out for the fire, you little tangy
Make a mind to make a friend. Give it up toenail
Too old for that. buy me a big one
To say what’s real, your not the boss of me
Meet my old man, he’s just a funny
He makes more than you will, take it away
I’ve got the only wisdom. we’re still friends
In time it will all be over, it will be good
But i’m old and i’m getting older, knew i would
Later days finally coming on to take me away
Little place near the holy one, and let’s run
