The Antlers Re-Record “Sylvia”

The Antlers recently crept back into the studio to re-record one of the songs from their Hospice album. “Sylvia,” among a list of other hypnotic tracks on the album, was easily the most disorienting of the chapters from Hospice‘s entire storyline.

Peter Silberman describes the album’s premise as dealing with “the idea of caring for a terminal patient who’s mentally abusive to you.” He goes on to say that, “you don’t have the right to argue with them, either, because they’re the one who’s dying here; they’re the one that’s been dealt a wrong hand. So you take it, but you can only take so much. Eventually, you realize that this person is just destroying you.”

The compelling basis for the material isn’t what is most disorienting about the track, but instead, it’s the number of layered sounds which hide the lyrics in the static. If you’re interested in hearing the new version of “Sylvia,” you can stream it on NPR.

The band packaged the updated track on iTunes with this video:
