Paper Route Play Berbati’s Pan in Portland

Nashville rock band Paper Route stopped by Berbati’s Pan in Portland to promote their debut album, Absence, just days after the video premiere of the album’s first single, “Carousel.” Though the band didn’t use a tangible set list, the songs from Absence were anything but, um, absent from their set.

The venue’s sound system was definitely (and regrettably) insufficient when it came to capturing the allure that is Paper Route’s texture and overall magnetism but Andy Smith’s falsetto more than made up for it, wavering between both powerful and ethereal, particularly during songs like “Gutter” and “Wish.”
Paper Route are celebrated for being a rock band who aren’t afraid to experiment with their sound and the band seem just as comfortable when it comes to pushing their own boundaries on stage. Through the use of several knobs and pedals (and the occassional accordion), Paper Route’s debut album is only amplified when Absence is translated from a studio album to a live show.
