Introducing: Noah and the Whale

Lovers of good music usually have other loves too. Loves like film, literature, and the occasional cup of coffee which sparks that great idea that’s been brewing in a mind that’s usually distracted by music, film, and literature. What happens when an artist decides to breach boundaries? I’m not talking about the traditional cross-over artist. Lindsay Lohan takes the cake there. The dry, hard, crumbled cake…
Charlie Fink, Doug Fink, Tom Hobden and Urby Whale are Noah and the Whale. The band’s name, being coined by their favorite film The Squid and the Whale as well as the director of the film, makes a person wonder how far inspiration could possibly take these young men. When you know that your music is the perfect soundtrack to a film which hasn’t been made yet, you pretty much just have to make the film. That’s exactly what Noah and the Whale decided to do.
After crafting an album with its “own internal narrative,” Charlie Fink, the band’s lead singer-songwriter, decided that the short film, The First Days of Spring, had to be made to accompany the album’s missing piece since Fink considers both arts a “unified thing.” The film and the album share the same title and run the same length as one another. Both the album and the film can be viewed and heard separately and enjoyed in their own respects. The film was simply made to visualize the album. I guess now, when you acquire a favorite song from the album, you can watch the film and see that it’s just not about the crush who broke your heart in high school.
