Introducing: Local Natives

We didn’t go to SXSW. If you’re let down, we apologize. But even without attending the festivities ourselves, we certainly have a bit of a SXSW hangover. If you follow a healthy amount of musicians on Twitter, the amount of #sxsw hash tags would’ve made you go cross-eyed. However the worst hangovers are always (usually?… sometimes?) a result of some pretty great adventures– even if you totally had to work that weekend and end up hearing the story 2,057 times from your friends who got that weekend off and want to retell the story every time you see them.

Right?
Bastards.

My favorite thing to rise from the dust of the SXSW mayhem is the group of five guys from California who call themselves Local Natives. I heard from a friend of a friend who knows a guy that their SXSW live sets were fantastic. In addition to their super-great-or-so-we-hear gigs over the weekend, their studio recordings are fun, too. After some (healthy) stalking, I found the band’s self-description on their YouTube channel: “Harmony laden percussive driven indie rock.”
I really can’t think of a better way to describe what they do.

Local Natives seem to be interested in doing things a little differently. My very first impression of them came through this video:

… and my first reaction was something along the lines of, “What the fuck was that?”
Then I watched it again and became less confused. By the third time, I actually really liked it. And now I totally get it.
I’m sold.

Get comfortable with the Local Natives. Whether they know it or not, they just found themselves their newest groupie.
