Introducing: Freelance Whales

Freelance Whales are just as much of a collection of five interesting individuals as they are a collection of interesting instruments. (Banjos and synthesizers and glockenspiels, oh my!) The band formed just last year, but with a strong musical union that remains apparent throughout their songs, it seems as if they’re already out of the honeymoon phase.
Freelance Whales are from Queens, where there is no shortage of bands vying for attention at all given moments. Guerrilla concerting is a great tactic for a band to showcase their talents. Freelance Whales aren’t doing anything too extreme like scaling buildings and playing out of authority’s reach, instead they’re taking a more subtle approach and have been known to show up at the Bedford L train stop and busk from time to time. See? Public transit can be fun.
It’s ironic that the band’s cover art for their first album, Weathervanes, is a picture of layered fabric and stitching, reminiscent of the layered sounds that the band bring to the table. You would think that with the number of instruments the band work with, there would be problems in trying to not overpower one another. Instead of clashing sounds, you get this:
