Album Reviews: Major Lazer, Spinal Tap, and Tiny Masters of Today

»Album Reviews For Release Date: 06.16.09
by Joshua Krage

Not much happening this week aside from an Incubus retrospective/rarities set, the triumphant return of Spinal Tap, and the JoBros’ rushed-out new LP, so I don’t feel guilty at all about skipping out to LA for a couple days. If any of you have more exciting additions to this rather bare list, do let’s share, won’t you?

Justin Adams & Juldeh Camara
Big Star
– 1st & 2nd album combo package!
The Builders and the Butchers
Rodney Carrington
Will Downing
George Harrison
– best-of
Don Henley – best-of
Incubus – a double-disc, side 1 a best-of (+2 new tracks), and rarities on side 2
Laura Izibor
Jonas Brothers
(OmG!)
The Legends

Major Lazer, Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do- ace experimental dancehall collab between board-twiddlers Diplo and Switch, with top-shelf guest spots from many of the genre’s major names.

Daryle Singletary

Spinal Tap, Back From The Dead- mostly a modern re-recording of all the Tap hits by the band before heading out on tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of “This Is Spinal Tap,” but a big (bottom) bonus comes in the first-ever official-like recording of “Jazz Oddyssey,” plus 5 brand new tracks which are pure comedy. Give them some money!

Street Sweeper Social Club
James Taylor

Tiny Masters of Today, Skeletons- this music is several shades of lo-fi awesome before you even find out that it’s written, played, and produced (!) by a 15-yr-old and 12-yr-old brother and sister, mostly on their Mac’s GarageBand program. This is their 2nd LP (first was helmed by Russell Simins), and young’uns or not, these juniors have real talent, and a long future ahead at this pace.

Ashley Tisdale
Twista
VA – Jonas Brothers Classical Tribute
– just… think about it…
Wallflowers – best of
Hank Williams Jr.
Holly Williams
Mark Wills

And that’s all we get this week. Hopefully next week will be better, but in summer months you can’t expect too much unless it’s a label-constructed, club-approved “summer jam,” and you won’t hear much about those from me. Now head outside and enjoy the weather. I know I’m about to.
